It is tomato season and with so many beautiful varieties in season, it is the perfect time of year to make homemade salsa. Did you know that there are over 7500 varieties of tomatoes? Tomatoes originated in South America and are actually a fruit, not a vegetable. Although commonly grown as an annual, tomatoes are actually a perennial that is high in lycopene.
Homemade salsa from the garden only takes minutes to make and you get to customize it to be as hot or mild as you prefer. This delicious salsa is a mixture of fresh tomatoes, cilantro, hot peppers, onions, and just a dash of cider vinegar and raw, local honey add a perfect hint of sweetness. Try your hand at fresh garden salsa and I bet you’ll be kicking the canned stuff straight to the curb.
Ingredients
- 8 ounces fresh tomatoes
- 1/3 cup onion
- 1/2 teaspoon apple cider vinegar
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon fresh cilantro or 1 teaspoon dried
- juice of 1 lime
- 2-3 small hot habanero or jalapeño peppers (I used 2 habaneros and 1 jalapeño for a super hot salsa, but you could use 1 green pepper if you prefer a mild salsa)
- drizzle of raw, local honey
Instructions
- Finely dice tomato, onion and pepper and mix together in a bowl.
- Combin vinegar, salt and lime and stir into tomato mixture. Toss with cilantro. If you enjoy a chunky salsa you're done. If you prefer a thicker, more blended salsa place half of the salsa in the blender and pulse a few times and then return the mixture to the salsa bowl. Serve with tortilla chips or your favorite mexican dish.

We love homemade salsa; but since we consume it so rapidly, we have to resort to buying Pace® by the gallon at Costco!
Do you seed your jalapeños before chopping?
I don’t seed them, Melody, as it makes for more heat in the salsa. If you want the salsa to be more mild, it would be best to seed them or use regular peppers.
I made fresh salsa for the first time last summer, and have never been able to eat the jarred stuff since! Yours looks great; so colorful.
Thanks, Lesa. Homemade is just hard to beat :)
So fresh and colorful looking! :)
Thanks. There is something about colorful food that just makes it taste better :)
Yummy! Can’t wait to try this, will prob use serranos – our fav pepper – we use it in everything! Pinning.
I love the color that one can only get from summer tomatoes. So bright red and vibrant. Beautiful salsa Katie.
Thanks, France :) Fresh veggies are just so yummy, how can anyone resist their beautiful, natural colors? Hope you guys have a great weekend!

My family loves salsa, but I never think to make it fresh. I tend to make a huge production out of it and bottle the stuff. I think it is about time to change that!!
It can really be made in just a few minutes. I’ve actually never canned salsa before because it is just so much work :)
Oh, how I adore fresh salsa! Perfect with all the gorgeous garden tomatoes available this time of year :)
Thanks, Liz. Don’t you just love all of the gorgeous tomato varieties available? This year we grew one called fuzzy peach and it was amazing!
I make fresh salsa as much as I can in the summer, but I never put vinegar in it. It never lasts long enouhg to worry about it going bad! And I like mine a little thicker, so I don’t chop anything too fine. I wish I could can the crispiness of what I make with the fresh salsa but all that heat would just ruin it.
