My little guy had his seventh birthday just recently and we are at a school that still allows parents to send homemade treats (love that!). I know that birthdays only come once a year, but when there are 17 kids in the class that is a lot of birthday cake. I just cringe thinking of all the nasty ingredients, hydrogenated oils and artificial colors in the bakery cakes.
I decided to step out on a limb and try adapting a favorite chocolate chip cookie dough recipe to use white whole wheat flour and use rapadura in place of brown sugar and white sugar. They looked and tasted delicious to me, but the true test was sending them in to a group of 7 years olds who are used to having white flour, white sugar laden treats. Would they reject these as inferior?
Nope, these cookies passed with flying colors. Everyone ate them right up and there weren’t even any crumbs left over! They are even husband approved, and he is not afraid to say when a whole wheat treat is not up his alley. :)
Ingredients
- 2 sticks butter, softened to room temperature
- 1 1/2 cups rapadura
- 2 eggs
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon real salt
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 2 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
- 1 cup dark chocolate chips
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350.
- Cream the butter and sugar. Stir in the eggs
- Mix in the baking soda, salt, flour and vanilla.
- Stir in the chocolate chips. The batter will be very thick.
- Drop dough by the tablespoonful onto a cookie sheet.
- Bake at 350 for 9-12 minutes.
- Remove the cookies from the cookie sheet and cool on a wire rack.

Happy birthday!! I am sure there were no crumbs left…so great that you can still bring homemade food to the classroom.
Thanks, Belinda!
That’s funny. I wouldn’t think twice about subbing in wwf for the white stuff…but you’re so right…they may not pass the kid test. hahaha. I’m so glad to here these did!
Kids are funny about being picky! I don’t ever worry about subbing in whole wheat at home, just when I’m feeding it to kids who might not be used to it.
What brand of type of chocolate chips are involved here? I can’t imagine grocery store chips are right for this recipe?
Thanks
D
I honestly use the special dark chocolate chips from the grocery store. Most of the time I buy Hershey’s which is not ideal. But, I am not too concerned since I rarely use chocolate chips.
Hi Katie, love this recipe and am going to try these this weekend! Thank you so much for sharing this on Seasonal Celebration! Rebecca @ Natural Mothers Network x
Hope you all love them :) Have a great weekend!
These look wonderful! Glad they are kid approved too :) Where do you buy your rapadura?
I got mine at whole foods and actually purchased sucanat (evaporated cane juice). You can also order it from amazon for pretty cheap which is where I buy a lot of my health food stuff.
These sound delicious :) Nothing better than chocolate chip cookies, traditional but yet delicious – especially when they’re made a tad bit healthier.
