These smoothies mix peanut butter, frozen banana, milk and oats. Don’t worry. The oats get ground up before you start so you’ll hardly even realize they’re in there. My 6 year old said that this smoothie is so good that I should open an ice cream store :) After giving up refined sugar (excluding my weekly dessert) it seems like nature’s “sweets” have grown to have a whole new level of flavor and depth that I never quite appreciated before. You could add a little bit of honey to these if you want to, but I recommend that you try it without the honey first. In my opinion it is just perfect without any extra sweetness added. It feels like you’re indulging in a treat, but they’re actually chock full of good for you stuff.
A few of my favorites include:
- Pumpkin Pie Smoothie
- Mango Banana Smoothie
- Berry Banana Oatmeal Smoothie
- Good Morning Smoothie with Wheat Germ (chock full of seasonal berries!)
- Cold Brewed Coffee (ok, its not a smoothie but it is fast and delicious!)
Hope your week is off to a great start! It’s grocery shopping day for me. Did I tell you all that I have cut back to doing one major shopping trip 2 times a month with only trips for produce and milk between. I’m loving that and so is my budget- our grocery bill has gone down by about 18%!!! Plus, I spend less time at the grocery. Isn’t it the small things in life that bring pleasure? I’m thinking of trying to cut it back even more to once every 3 weeks, but I have a teeny pantry so not I’m sure if that will work. What is your best time/money saving tip concerning stocking the kitchen?
Peanut Butter Banana Smoothie Recipe
serves 2
2 bananas sliced and frozen
1/4 cup oats
1/4 cup peanut butter
3/4 cup milk
Put oats in blender and blend until they’re powdery. Add remaining ingredients and blend until there are no more chunks of frozen banana. Garnish with fresh banana slices if desired.

Hi Katie! This recipe looks so good! Will have to try…but do you mean 1/4 cut peanut butter? 14 cups seems like a lot ! ;) My best money saving tip-green bags for fruits and veggies. They really do work!
I love peanut butter and banana. I think I'll try this. Love the idea to add the oats, would have never thought of that!
Well, this chick thinks your my new BFF! I've tried smoothie's with PB before, but never quite got it right. I'm trying this TODAY!!!
Yum! Now this is my kind of smoothie!Jo-Anna
re-posting this one here: <a href="http://myabcsoup.blogspot.com/p/health.htmlhttp://myabcsoup.blogspot.com/p/health.html<br />this is a favorite! I can't wait to make!! brittany @ http://www.myabcsoup.blogspot.com
How sweet that your 6-yr-old liked it that much! It sounds fantastic, and I love that it has oats in it!
These looks so cute. I tried exactly this last week, but I didn't let the oats grind long enough. So, the texture was awful. I think I'll try it again after hearing your daughter's rave review!
This looks really good. I'm going to have to give it a try!
These smoothies look so yummy and I will be trying them soon! Thanks for sharing!
We love smoothies and I'm definitely going to serve this one up to my PB lovin hubby!
I haven't been a big fan of smoothies, but I am a big fan of bananas and peanut butter so I am definitely going to try this one tomorrow morning. With the oats, it may just become my "go-to" breakfast. Coincidentally, tomorrow I am posting a salad dressing dip made with peanut butter, honey, and mayo which I love on bananas. Have a great day.
That looks just delicious and what great pictures.
Looks good! I'm always looking for healthy alternatives! Thanks for the recipe!~Jessa http://www.jessajill.blogspot.com
This is my kind of smoothie! It sounds delicious, and great for an after school snack too!
Yummm! And the kids will LOVE this!
Yummy! This looks so good-and will help in my quest to eat healthy without sacrificing taste. I would love it if you came and linked this up to my weekly link party <a rel="nofollow" rel="nofollow">Tutorial Tuesday Kari<a rel="nofollow" rel="nofollow">Newlyweds on a Budget
This looks so yummy and healthy! My two favorite things. It's even inexpensive. Make that 3 favorite things.:) I can't wait to try it.
This looks really good. I'm going to try this later!
I can't wait to try this with coconut milk!
I've been adding oatmeal to a lot of my smoothies since I first read about it here. And with your 6 year old's seal of approval, this one has to be wonderful!
Love! And perfect for all of those bananas going brown on the counter :)
Your banana smoothie looks yummy!I shopped for my groceries twice a month. It definitely cut the cost down. I would make a list of things I want, and on my grocery shopping day, I would go thru it again, crossing out the ones that is not necessary. This really helps to keep the cost down and avoid overspending. Have a lovely day, Katie!
I'm so trying this when I get bananas! LOVE the oats in it!
I made this! so gooooood. I posted on my blog and linked back to you!Thank you!!http://successful2gether.blogspot.com/2011/08/peanut-butter-banana-smoothie.html
Took your idea and made something like this. I have made fruit shakes often, fruit juice with fruit, for years. Started adding yogurt, then fresh nuts (walnuts, almonds, pecans) and now thanks to you I have made a milk type shake. I put the oatmeal and nuts in the blender first and mix, then add the frozen bananas with some yogurt and milk, delicious!!! Also have added raisins. Thanks for the idea of oatmeal. I feel like I have had a full breakfast on the go! Today tried it with fresh strawberries!
Katie, I am back to say I made this today, and it was so good. Your daughter is right about the ice cream store. I only had old-fashioned oats so it took a little while to get them processed fine enough. I am going to just process a bunch of oats ahead and store them. That will make this really quick and easy. One tip, if your pantry is small consider other areas of your house for food storage-canned goods can go under a bed for instance and worth it if the sale price is good enough.
Oh yum! Can't wait to try it!
This recipe looks awesome! What a great summertime treat :D-Rach
These look yummy. What a simple breakfast idea.
Okay – I'm off to put a couple of bananas in the freezer so I can try this tomorrow. Sounds AWESOME. And doesn't use too much PB – because PB is expensive where I live. :)

Nice! I currently drink a pb/banana/almond milk smoothie every morning and add a scoop of chocolate Shakeology powder – the flavor combo is amazing. Though I do wish I had read about your "sliced and frozen" bananas before I tossed a bunch of bananas in the freezer without first peeling them! *slaps forehead* LOL
I cant wait to try this …. This sounds like the perfect recovery drink for my son after his swim team practice! Thanks :)
Hi Katie,I just love your presentation of your wonderful Peanut Butter Banana Smoothie. Wish I had it right now! Hope you are having a great week end and thank you so much for sharing with Full Plate Thursday!See you soon,Miz Helen
May sound stupid but I never thought of putting frozen bananas and peanut butter in the blender. I often make banana smoothies and love peanut butter – so it makes perfect sense! I'm totally going to have to try this!I'm having a giveaway on my blog. Stop by if you'd like! Shannonsews.blogspot.com
Okay, coming back to say that I tried this today. It was WONDERFUL! And it kept me full so I enough energy to do my run this morning.
THANK YOU so much for sharing your recipes with me at Cast Party Wednesday. I'd like to invite you back this week. Thanks,I hope to see you again!
Going to try this. It looks pretty easy and tasty! Visiting from Under the Table and Dreaming.
I found this on Under The Table and Dreaming. I made it over the weekend for my boys who loooved it! So much so it was part of their breakfast this morning. Gotta love the combo of banana & PB, but I was surprised how creamy the banana makes it without the use of yogurt or ice. Thanks for sharing!
Oh yummm if it weren't so late in the evening I would make these right now.. They look delish.
Made this tonight for my lunch tomorrow. I couldn't help but take a lick now though. So tasty!
just made this, added nutella to it (my FAVE flavor combo is chocolate, banana, and PB :D), and i added flaxseed meal. it is DELICIOUS. i'm thinking of making a bunch, freezing them, and then taking them to work with me. this is delicious!! and it's a really good idea to grind a bunch of oats and keep them. that's brilliant.we have a tiny apartment with no pantry, so we use book shelves in our kitchen. they're sturdy and then we also have an ikea one we store the lightweight snacks and whatnot. we've just taught our kids to not go crazy grabbing stuff, so that's not a problem, and most of the accessible stuff is actually covered up (one bookshelf is kind of old school like to be a computer desk fold-out thing, and it has doors on the bottom too). then i keep all my baking stuff in that weird computer door space, pasta below, even keep our microwave in the bookshelf (it's weird, yes, but it's a space saver!). anyway, we just store food where we can. :)

and i just freeze bananas whole then peel and slice. it wasn't hard and i do that kind of thing all the time, so that i can make banana cake and banana bread. :) (but i also used really ripe bananas)

Oh yummy! This sounds so good.
Just used this recipe (added a little chocolate)….seriously tasty!
This was delicious! I recently discovered the recipe on Pinterest and made it today. Thank you!
Love them. Been splitting them with my daughter for breakfast. They really keep you full for a good long time (and I'm 9 months pregnant!) and the ice creamy texture is perfection. Oh, and for my husband who has a sweet tooth, I used half pb half nutella. Also amazing!
Two bananas was a little over powering! I switched it up and added 2 tbsp of honey and used only 1 banana! it was perfect =]
I'm not the biggest fan of peanut butter, but I definitely wanted to try something that was more healthy…especially when my husband likes to indulge in ice cream. I made this just a few minutes ago for the first time and I LOVE it! The peanut butter taste is not very strong, so I'm definitely enjoying it. I ground up a bunch of the oats so I can easily add them in as I make this. In the future I'll be switching out to skim milk to make it even healthier (I only had 2% on hand). Thanks for sharing this!
Found this on Pinterest :-) I was so glad to know I'm not the only fan of PB and Banana smoothies. Everyone else I know goes "ewwww!" But this is an improvement on mine because a) I never thought to freeze the bananas (nice!) and b) I never thought to dry blend the oats … thank you!
Okay I have to ask are the oats quick cook or old fashioned? This sounds yummy!
I always use old fashioned oats but I think either type would work fine!
This was absolutely delicious! LOVE IT!!
This sounds delicious – will definitely try.I did see a good tip for smoothies: take all your ingredients in individual servings and put them all in zip lock freezer bag – freeze: all you have to do is put all this in blender for your smoothie. You can buy your fruit in larger quantities since you will be freezing it. What is the font you use for your name? Love it – I'm into fonts
Doris, that is a great idea for freezing individual servings! I actually don't know the name of the font but it came from mylivesignature.com.
I found this on Pinterest too :) I tried it this morning and it was delicious! Thank you!
I found this recipe via Pinterest and I have to say I love it so much – I actually crave these smoothies and have made them for breakfast, lunch and dinner. It is the perfect combination of protein and fiber and really keeps me full. I grind up enough oats for the entire week and buy a bunch of bananas and use one a day (unfrozen). I also use vanilla almond milk instead of regular milk and Smart Balance peanut butter. Such a healthy and delicious treat!
This is amazing. I found it on Pinterest, and love it. I always think bananas overpower smoothies, so I tried just one banana and it was great! I added some a couple of ice cubes since I only put one banana in it, and it's good. Next time I would probably do one and a half bananas. Thanks for the recipe!
delish! I cut the milk back to 1/2 C and added 1/4 C non fat plain yogurt for a little thicker smoothie and a few ice cubes to get it nice and chilled. My 2 yr. old tried to drink mine "me gone" (all gone). She thought it was a treat. :)
This is delicious! I added a bit more of milk and some honey and it's so good! Thank you for sharing :)
I saw this on pinterest and had to try it! It is so good and such a great on the go breakfast! I added just a touch of honey! :) so great! Thanks!
Sounds fantastic. I've been doing the frozen banana thing too, but adding the oats should keep me full longer. Can't wait to try it tomorrow, perhaps with a dash of cinnamon. Saw this on Pinterest, by the way.
I have food allergies so I used certified gluten free oats and vanilla coconut milk. I felt a little "bad" having this for breakfast because it tasted more like dessert! It was wonderful! Also found this on Pinterest and I'm sharing it with everyone!
Found this on Pinterest and had to give it a try. I am not a huge PB fan but I figured with the banana it might be good. Oh my gosh! So delish!! I have been have problems with nausea lately so nothing has sounded good and this didn't upset my stomach and kept me nice and full!
I am excited to try this! I have a terrible sore throat, so I"m in need of a healthy, cold, and creamy remedy. Glad I found you on Pinterest :)
Sounds yummy! Is it possible to make the night before and put it in the fridge or freeze it? i didn't know if it would change the texture with the oats.
Katie – just wanted to let you know that I shared this on my blog and Facebook page. I'm a vegan so I use almond milk instead, and it's delicious! Thanks so much! http://lifethroughendurance.blogspot.com/Michele
i couldn't find the recipe for this so I tried it by memory…it was okay. I didn't blend my oats first (and i had to use a packet of plain oatmeal) and i froze the bananas whole (with the skin on!)Now that I have 'pinned' on pintrest, i will try it the REAL way next time. I'm sure if I follow the directions this time and not my memory it will be awesome!! Thanks for the idea!!
I tried this with granola instead of oats because I was all out of them, and it was really good!
I just got my wisdom teeth out & found this on Pinterest months ago. It was time to make it this morning — DELICIOUS!
This is such a delicious shake. Since finding it on Pinterest I drink it for lunch a lot of days and it is very filling. I also recently tried it by subing chopped almonds for the peanut butter and that is very good too! Thanks for sharing!!
Just tried this = amazing!! Thanks!!
I found this on Pinterest and repinned it. I love the addition of oats and can't wait to try this.
I make something similiar but use chocolate soy milk instead of regular milk and add a spoonful of honey.
hi i just found you from pinterest.. is there a particular post where you talk about changing your grocery shopping habits, cutting out sugar and what you shop for now??? im interested in doing this.. but have no idea where to start!! thanks :))
What could you use in place of bananas? My daughter is allergic to them.
You aren't kidding! This is delicious! It tastes SOOOO decadent. I have had disgusting horrible milkshakes that aren't as awesome as this. I just made it for myself and I even had to come back and log back on so I could comment on how delicious this is and then share on FB! LOL
This is SOOO good! I made it for my kids for lunch. I'm watching my calories, so I just tasted a few teaspoons full, but oh my! I LOVE it and so do they!
These are delicious! I made these for my husband and I after a warm afternoon at the driving range. I'm sipping as I type. Absolutely irresistible!
Hi Katie, this smoothie looks divine. Do you have a breakout of calories, carbs, fat, etc. in this concoction? Thank you!
Sorry, I don't have a breakdown of the nutritional content. I really don't watch my calories, but just try to eat a diet rich in nutrients. I think that there are ingredient calculators where you could input the ingredients and it will tell you the stats. Hope that helps!
Just made it this morning and it was delish! Only substitution I made was PB2 instead of peanut butter! WAY less calories and fat but same pb taste!!!!
Made this morning and the family loves em.
Used all natural P'butter with flax seed and added a scoop of Protein Powder delish! Thanks
Yum! We threw a little cocoa powder in for a bit of a chocolate flavor. My 4 year old drank it all up!
Thank you for the recipe, it's Wheat Free & Gluten Free, so I can enjoy it! :-)
Thanks, this was very good! I added a little milled flax seed and the texture was still very good.
I made these for my kids and substituted whole milk yogurt for the milk. They loved it.
so so so good!!
Since I am always on the go since I have a travel website and work at a animal shelter, I am always looking for quick breakfast. This fits the bill perfectly for me. I love bananas and peanut butter. Not only it is filling and nutritious it satisfies my sweet tooth. Thanks for sharing the recipe.
My pleasure! Thanks for stopping by, Wendy.
I have had a hard time getting 6 year old daughter to eat breakfast before school but I tried this smoothie and she loved it! Thanks so much!
That is so great to hear :) I’m so glad she enjoyed it!
Yum I can’t wait to try this.. I usually make green smoothies so this will be a treat thats for sure.. can’t wait to try it!
Hope you enjoy it!
Thanks for the recipe, featured it on my blog today with nutrition info.
Thanks, Heidi! I’m glad you enjoyed it :)
YUM! I just made this for breakfast, very good! I didn’t have a frozen banana so I just tossed in one from my counter and added ice instead. Also, instead of milk I used chocolate almond milk and added 2 TBSP of flax seed. Loved it! I think I better calculate the calories though! lol Great healthy start to my day, thank you for posting :)
Tiffany,
So glad you enjoyed the recipe! :)
I love the jar and the banana garnish. Looks so wholesome!
Thanks,Angela!
I do something similar, just add raw cacao (cocoa) powder… Unsweetened, of course! It’s so good, like a chocolate pb covered banana :)
Sounds yummy, Victoria!
I just came across this. I wanted to let everyone in on what I have been making the past couple days. I use 1/2 banana, 1 tbsp of peanut butter, soymilk, couple slices of apple, about 2 tbsp of oats, and a generous sprinke of groud flax seed. I blend it all together with a couple pieces of ice and its awesome! Makes about 3-4 cups pending how much soymilk you use. Im vegan so this is a treat!
Sounds fabulous and cannot wait to try! Can thed y be made and then frozen? Just wondering if the texture would change.
I’ve never tried it, but I really think they’re best made on demand :)
I added 1 scoop of chocolate protein powder and the rest of the recipe as is and it perfectly filled up one of my dinner glasses. Perfect amount for one person for breakfast. The protein will help keep my stomach satisfied for longer. :)
Glad you enjoyed the smoothie, Brianna :)
Hi, How many servings does this make? The recipe added up to 807 calories total as published, and I wasnt sure if it was 1 or 2 servings.
Thanks
It makes 2-3 servings, depending on how large of a smoothie you want.
I tried this just now and it was VERY thick a lil to thick for my liking and had to much peanut butter so next time i think ill cut out half the peanut butter and add more milk
Thanks for a great recipe – I made it and fetured it on my blog for a challenge and it was the most popular! Thanks a million (I added a link back to your site too).
http://momscrazycooking.blogspot.com/2012/06/peanut-butter-banana-oatmeal-smoothie.html
So glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for letting me know!
this is delicious! i’ve been looking for good, light, (but still hearty and healthy( smoothie recipes to try out this summer to beat the heat –– blended this up this morning and it hit the spot without any gross aftertaste that some other smoothies have! absolutely divine, thank you so much! :)
Im enjoying one of these fine smoothies right now. Its delicious! I really like the idea of adding oats. Next time I think I may use some yogurt to make it thicker.
Found this on Pinterest and it is SO good! Added Chia seeds and whey protein after a workout. Used about 3 spoonfuls of pb and a little more milk. I love that this is so healthy, full of protein, and yet tastes like dessert! Thanks!! Tried some of your other ones too and loved.
This looks DELICIOUS!! But why do the bananas have to be frozen? :)
They do not have to be frozen, but we prefer to use frozen bananas as it yields a thicker, creamier smoothie.
What kind of oats should I use? Regular or steel cut?
Either rolled oats or quick oats will work best. Steel cut are too coarse and would be gritty in the smoothie.
I’m drinking my first cup of it…and I will be making more!!! I did add a few ice cubes and a TBSP of sugar to sweeten it (no honey in the house) and man it’s curving my pregnancy cravings right now lol Love it!!!!
Best banana smoothie ever! Even my 3 year old who will only eat speghetti o’s and meatballs keeps asking for more of this and he says it’s good for his body LOL.
Thanks for this!
You’re very welcome, Stephanie. I love when the little ones enjoy real foods :)
Does anyone have any idea how many calories this smoothie comes out to be? Thanks!
I don’t count calories but you could enter the ingredients into a calorie calculator (google it and there are plenty) to get the calorie info.
I made this smoothie and it was really delicious!! Thank you so much for sharing the recipe. I love bannanas and peanut butter but have never found the right combination. The search is over!
You’re very welcome!
Love this recipe. I’m in my third trimester of pregnancy and still fighting morning sickness while dealing with the heat of a Texas summer at the same time. This smoothie helps me get a lot of good nutrients while helping to cool me down. It’s been a life saver! I do add some honey or agave and about 1/2 cup of ice just to help stretch it a bit further!
I put 1 Tbs of honey in mine. It is SO good. I never thought of a peanut butter banana smoothie until I came across a recipe. Its delicious and super easy to make
Thanks, Sarah! Don’t you just love it when simple things are so good. Thanks for stopping by and hope you’ll come again soon. Have a blessed day!
This smoothie recipe was fabulous! Delicious and filling! Thanks for posting!
Did you cook the oats? Or are they raw?
I used raw. Just the rolled oats you buy in the bag canister.
This smoothie is AMAZING! Made it the other day for breakfast and wow! I could only drink about half because it’s so filling but it lasted me 2 days worth of breakfast. Can’t wait to try your other ones :P
Thanks, Krystina! :)
Hi…I can’t wait to try this. It caught my eye and I would love to feature you this Wednesday on Home Cooking. Hope you get a chance to stop by and maybe even grab my button. Happy New Year!
http://gangi-homecooking.blogspot.com/
This smoothie is delicious. Even my picky 6 year old likes them.
:)
