I love cinnamon buns. They are so delicious and sweetly perfect. What’s not to love? Gooey homemade bread with butter, cinnamon and sugar, and even raisins and glaze. Yum. These actually have a biscuit-like texture and they are fabulous. I came across this recipe in an old Better Homes and Gardens cookbook circa 1930. This special book belonged to my Grandma and Great Grandma, and these scrumptious cinnamon buns are actually the very first recipe I’ve made from the book. I can just picture my Grandma when she was a young woman making these same cinnamon buns for my Grandpa and my Dad years and years ago. And now here I am making them for my own family. If that isn’t special, then I don’t know what is. There is just something so primal and wonderful about food. They say it is the way to a man’s heart. So, make these and I bet you’ll win a heart or at least get some brownies points :) This cinnamon bun recipe is a perfect trifecta- Quick + easy + tasty = winner in my book.
These cinnamon buns are simple to whip up. Make your dough, roll it out and sprinkle it with sugar and cinnamon and raisins. Roll up the dough jelly roll style, slice it and put them on a greased pan and bake. Easy peasy. Make some and you’ll be glad you did. I’m guest posting today over at The Comfort of Cooking. Come on over, check out some Honey Wheat Pumpkin Muffins and say hi!
Quick, No-Rise Cinnamon Buns
2 1/2 cups flour
3 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup sugar
2 tablespoons butter
1 egg
1 cup milk
3/4 cup raisins
2 tablespoons sugar
2 teaspoons cinnamon
Sift the flour and then add baking powder, salt and 1/4 cup sugar. Cut in the butter until it resembles coarse crumbs. Beat the egg and the milk and then mix into the flour mixture, only until just mixed.
Turn out the dough onto the floured counter and roll it out. Sprinkle with raisins and half of the sugar and cinnamon. Roll the dough like a jelly roll and cut it into slices. Slice it into 1 inch rounds, place on a well greased glass pan (like a 9×13) and sprinkle with the remaining cinnamon and sugar. Bake at 400 for 14-18 minutes and serve hot. You can top these with a simple glaze if desired (1 cup powdered sugar mixed with 4 teaspoons water)

You had me hooked at "no rise". LOLSuch a great history behind them too – love that!Brandie
This is great! No rise, really! I saved this one. Thanks Katie!
You mean I DON'T have to wait innumerable hours for dough to rise? You mean I can stuff my face, uh, I mean enjoy myself that much more easily? Oh, this is dangerous stuff…

Popped over from SS and love this idea. I always use frozen cinnamon rolls and now I want to make these instead!
It's been so long since I had a cinnamon roll. I was totally put of them when I made the mistake of buying one from a supermarket a few years ago and it had far far too much cinnamon in it. This however looks really delicious and like it definitely isn't trying to pack the whole tree in!
My mom was telling me about a no-rise cinnamon roll that she used to make for my dad when they were first married. I bet this is it. I love that you have that cookbook that's been handed down. It gives recipes just a little bit more when you know they've been handed down =)
Katie these sound heavenly!! And Im lovin the 'no rise' part! Thanks for adding my blog to your blog roll : ) I added yours to mine too! Have a great weekend!
Wow! Not only do they sound easy, these look beautiful! Yet another wonderful recipe to add to my "to-bake" list!

Wow, a cookbook that your grandmother and great-grandmother used – that is so wonderful. The cinnamon rolls look delicious!
I love recipes like this – yours looks delish!
I am so happy to find a cinnamon roll recipe that doesn't call for yeast! I love cinnamon rolls but don't feel comfortable making yeast breads and don't like all the extra time it takes for the bread to ride etc. I really look forward to trying this. I'm sure my family will be thanking you! :)
Just found you over at Georgia's blog….these cinnamon buns look awesome! So happy I found you :)
What a fantastic recipe! My family loves homemade cinnamon rolls but I rarely make them because of the rising, etc. These are gorgeous, I'm so excited to try them!
Mouth watering!!! This is great, thanks for posting!!!
Hmm…I tried this, and the dough is way too goopy to turn out and roll. I tried another recipe that was very similar, but called for two more tablespoons of butter, and it was MUCH easier to roll out.
That's great that these rolls don't have to rise! Thanks for sharing the recipe!
I can't wait to try these! I'm way too impatient to ever wait for cinnamon rolls to rise :p
Deb, I am sorry to hear that you had issues!

I'll be posting the next link party tomorrow night. I can't wait to see what you have to share this week!http://sunscholars.blogspot.com
I could definitely use a recipe like this. All the wonderfulness of cinnamon buns without having to wake up at the crack of dawn to make them. By the way, this made the Top 5 for last week's Sweets for a Saturday. Congrats!
I'm excited to try these. Sad to say, my kids have only had cinnamon rolls from the grocery-the Pillsbury ones-and they love them. However, I've wanted to try homemade ones, and I think these are it!Question though..have you ever frozen them? I like to batch cook, and I'm getting ready for another batch cooking day. Thanks!
Carrie- I have never tried freezing these so I have no idea how well it would work out. Let me know how it goes if you try it. Thanks!
That is so sweet! Keeping the tradition of making thse same buns for you family, from your Grandma, I love it! I've copied the recipe to try soon :), Miriam@Meatless Meals For Meat Eaters
Like everyone else I love that they're quick. When you're craving a cinnamon roll you think, "in 4 hours am I still going to want one?" With this recipe I'll still want one when they're done! Thanks.

Katie, thanks so much for your comment! I am happy to post my chocolate banana cake recipe on your site and I am looking forward to trying your recipe for cinnamon buns, substituting the sugar with honey. Have a great week!
These cinnamon buns are wonderful! I revised your recipe by removing the cane sugar, since I am sensitive to it, and adding some whole wheat flour. The result was a home run! I just posted my revised recipe on my blog, with kudos to you for the original recipe. Thank you for a delicious treat!
Well, Nothing better than a cinnamon bun! That's so great that the recipe has been passed down through the family. And plan to cook it once again.
